Dirk Hagner: The Hungry Eye, (Der Hunger Des Auges) marks a reflective moment in the long and inventive career of a master printmaker. Carefully curated from a decade of creative work, this exhibition explores a vast range of complex visual and intellectual ideas. The Hungry Eye takes the viewer on a journey through color, medium, texture, and composition while simultaneously delving into philosophy, poetry, history, and science.
Dirk Hagner is a printmaker in made love with his medium. Originally from Essen, Germany, Hagner studied drawing, printmaking, photography, and painting at the Folkwang University School of Fine Art. In the 1980s, after completing this master's degree, Hagner relocated to the U.S., where his techniques and artistic vision continued to evolve.
In his art, old and new technigues and ideas compliment each other. Working in new directions, he constantly finds himself drawing historic, geographic, political and artistic connections to the past. Old processes like woodcut and etching are married with photo intaglio and fax machine. New ideas refer to old concepts and the only constant is the interpretation of what we see in terms of delineation. Above all, everything is about drawing: We reduce the world to two dimensions and lines. With his often wry interplay of Eastern and Western elements and sensibilities he gives a new edge to the traditional "bite" of the print, jotting down notes on our world and human folly.
This exhibition demonstrates not only Hagner's unique artistic talents but also shows the great possibilities for contemporary printmaking.
